THE GREEK ALPHABET
The Greek alphabet cannot be transliterated into other languages in a straightforward way. This can lead to variations in
romanised spellings of Greek words and placenames. It also leads inevitably to inconsistencies, especially when comparing
different guide books, leaflets and signs. However, the differences rarely make any name unrecognisable. The language looks
complex, but it is worth memorising the alphabet to help with signs, destinations etc.
