PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Internal Flights
Domestic flights are operated by Olympic Airways, and it is possible to make connections at Athens and Thessaloníki to several provincial airports, and to the Greek Islands. Domestic tickets on Olympic Airways are non-transferable, and a no-smoking policy is operated on all their internal flights.

Trains
There are two railway stations in Athens, Peloponnisou (Phone: 513 1601) for the Peloponnese and nearby Larissis (Phone: 823 7741) for lines north. Services are more restricted than in other countries, due partly to the terrain and partly to the well-established excellent bus service. For timetable information Phone: 145/6/7.

Metro
The metro system has three lines. M1 runs from Piraeus in the southwest to Kifissia in the north. M2 runs from the northwest to Syntagma Square. M3 runs from Syntagma Square to the northeast. Journeys are cheap, based on a zone system. Trains run every five minutes from 5am to 12:15am.

Buses
Despite a huge network, this is not the best way to get around Athens. Tickets (100 dr), are valid for one journey and must be bought in advance from a booth near the bus stop, or certain kiosks and shops. They must then be punched on the machine on board, though buses can be so crowded it is impossible to reach the machine.

Ferries/Hydrofoils
The main ferry port in Athens is Piraeus which runs services to mainland towns and certain islands. There are several different harbours here, some distance apart, so be sure to check from which harbour your service departs. Timetables can be obtained from offices of NTOG.
