HEALTH Insurance Visitors from European Union (EU) countries are entitled to reciprocal state medical care in Athens with form E111, available from post offices. This only covers treatment in the most basic of hospitals, and private medical insurance is still advised and is essential for all other visitors. Dental Services Free treatment is available at the Piraeus Dentistry School and the Evanghelismios Hospital. See the telephone directory for private dentists or ask at your hotel or embassy. Treatment should be covered by private medical insurance. Sun Advice The sunniest months are July and August with daytime temperatures well up into the 30s and sometimes over 40°C. Avoid the midday sun and use a strong sunblock. Don't underestimate the dehydration effects of walking around sightseeing - drink lots of water. Drugs Prescription and non-prescription drugs and medicines are available from pharmacies (farmakia), distinguished by a large green cross. Note that codeine is banned in Greece and you can be fined for carrying it. Safe Water Tap water is perfectly safe, but bottled water is widely available. |
