Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail

Set within the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail leads to the Makapuu Lighthouse, which dates to 1909. The contrast of the red-roofed lighthouse against the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean makes a great photo opportunity. The paved coastal trail leads from the Kaiwi parking lot. With roughly 400 feet (120 meters) in elevation gain and plenty of reasons to stop and enjoy the view, most visitors take roughly two hours to complete the out-and-back trail.

• Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle—this hike can get sunny and hot.

• Restrooms are at the nearby Makapuu Beach Park.

• Parking at the start of the trail is free but limited.

• The lighthouse, though great for photos, is not publicly accessible.

• This trail is great for spotting Hawaiian birds such as the ‘iwa, frigatebird, and tropicbird, so bring those binoculars.

The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is on the island’s southeastern point, right off the Kalanianaole Highway (Highway 72). Take the road past Makapuu Beach Park—from there, the road climbs up toward Makapuu Head and the Kaiwi parking lot. The gate opens early in the morning, typically around 7am; if you come too early, park at the Makapuu Point Lookout parking lot.

If you’re visiting in summer, the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail can get quite hot—it’s exposed to the sun the whole way. Beat the heat by coming early in the morning, which will also get you beating the crowds. As this is one of Oahu’s most popular hikes, visiting on a weekday is good for elbow room, too.

While most folks will head to the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail—and Oahu at large—in summer, this is one of the spots that prove the island is a great winter destination. From December to May, this coastal trail is a great place to scout for humpback whales leaping, spouting, and swimming off the coast. Bonus: Winter means fewer humans, too.
