POINT OF INTEREST

A. Schwab

163 Beale St., Memphis, TN

A. Schwab is a historic general store founded in Memphis in 1874. It’s located on the famous thoroughfare Beale Street and opened its doors 30 years after Beale Street was established. Today, it’s the last remaining original store on Beale Street, acting as one of the oldest existing 19th-century landmarks in the city.

Since 1876, A. Schwab has expanded its footprint on Beale Street to provide an old-fashioned experience while carrying more contemporary goods. You’ll find anything and everything on the store’s two creaky wooden floors, including books, dry goods, jewelry, and local souvenirs. You can visit anytime during operating hours, though some visitors prefer to pass by on a walking tour to learn more about A. Schwab and the other original stores that once lined Beale Street.

  • The small Beale Street Museum is located upstairs.

  • It’s a great place to get souvenirs for Memphis attractions like Sun Studios.

  • Learn more about the formerly enslaved persons of the Southeastern United States to better understand the hoodoo items for sale.

A. Schwab is located at 163 Beale Street in downtown Memphis. Most visitors spending time in this entertainment district will arrive via cab, public transportation via the Beale/2nd St. bus stop, or by private car. The closest parking garages for A. Schwab are Lee Landing at 200 South Second, 250 Peabody Place Parking Garage, and 110 Peabody Place Parking Garage. Limited street parking is also available.

A. Schwab’s is an ideal shopping stop while touring Beale Street’s clubs and other attractions. Store hours vary, but most days, you’ll want to visit around mid-afternoon. The eclectic mix ranges from novelty to souvenir necessity, so plan to spend more than a few minutes ogling the merchandise. Arrive an hour before closing, especially if you’re adding a sweet treat at the Soda Fountain to your visit.

The pedestrian-friendly Beale Street is adjacent to Handy Park, a laid-back greenspace that often hosts free concerts. Just one block east of A. Schwab, Handy Park was named after W.C. Handy, the father of the blues. Two stages draw visitors to the park, offering a free space to sit and enjoy your Soda Fountain treats from A. Schwab’s.
