Named for railroad surveyor Edward Gillette, the town was developed as a ranching area and became a hub for transporting livestock to market. Now coal and oil industries fuel Gillette's economy. During summer, coal mine tours can be arranged through the convention and visitors bureau. The bureau also offers an assistance program for hunters interested in the mule deer, pronghorn antelopes and elk populations in the area.
