The Research Triangle Region is an area twice the size of Rhode Island. The term “Triangle” was first used to refer to an area anchored by the state's three major universities—the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University in Raleigh and Duke. It now refers to a six-county metropolitan area and a 13-county state planning region. A 7,000-acre wooded tract of land, 4 miles south of downtown via SR 147, is known as Research Triangle Park and is home to many pharmaceutical and information technology companies.
