When the vanguard of the Union force topped the rise, they faced the muzzles of thousands of pistols and rifles and eight cannons—and charged. A half-hour later the numerically superior Confederates were routed, defeated by the Union's better weapons, position and cavalry. By forcing the Confederates out of Kansas and saving Fort Scott from attack, the Battle of Mine Creek extinguished the South's hope of success in the West.
