The Golden Rule Store was a Longmont retailer credited with launching JCPenney into the dry goods business; the name was changed accordingly in 1912. Today, the town is an important agricultural center, with sugar beets a chief crop. An appreciation of the arts has resulted in a growing collection of public art pieces placed around town. Outdoor recreational opportunities are plentiful and include hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, hot air balloon rides and skiing.
