Ta Phin Village

Just 6 miles north of Sapa—northern Vietnam’s most well-known resort town—Ta Phin has retained its distinct culture and way of life. Massive rice terraces in brilliant shades of green line the mountain slopes, women in colorful traditional costumes line the paths, and embroidery and handmade crafts are highly prized.

The village has invested in ecotourism to stay afloat in the modern age. A small fee is required to enter Ta Phin; from there, you can take tours, enjoy a medicinal bath (a Ta Phin specialty), meet locals with a homestay, take an embroidery lesson, taste local wines, enjoy the spring wildflowers, and more.

• Bring small bills or coins (dong) to pay the entrance fee.

• Staying overnight at a homestay, like Ta Phin Homestay or Ta Phin Lodge, is a great way to deepen your village experience.

• You can support locals by purchasing handmade souvenirs, like embroidery.

While you could technically walk from Sapa (which would be scenic), it’s about 9 miles (12 kilometers) on country backroads. Your best bet is to hail a xe om (motor taxi); just be sure to work out the price in advance with your driver. You may find a tour from Sapa that includes Ta Phin as well.

March through May is a great time to visit Ta Phin village—you’ll likely catch the wildflowers still in their colorful blooms, and the summer heat won’t be too egregious. September-November is also an excellent time to visit; both windows avoid peak crowds, too-hot days, and the rainy season to boot (typically May–September).

Beyond the village, Ta Phin also offers access to Ta Phin Cave, which is full of stalactites and makes for spectacular photos. There are also the ruins of an old French monastery on the outskirts of town. If you’re into photography, just mill around the village, its rice terraces, and backcountry roads, and follow your curiosity.
