Salar Jung Museum
Salar Jung Road, Darulshifa, Hyderabad, Telangana
One of the largest museums in the world, this Hyderabad institution is celebrated for its massive collection of art and artifacts from across Asia, Europe, and North America. Most of the objects here were collected by Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III, a nobleman who served as Prime Minister of the Hyderabad Deccan from 1912-1914.
This massive museum has 39 galleries across three floors, the bulk of which (26) are situated in the Central Block. Notable items in the museum include a large collection of Qurans, a room dedicated to clocks, an extensive collection of daggers, and a copy of Giovanni Maria Benzoni's famed Veiled Rebecca. It's among Hyderabad's most important attractions, and many city tours and virtually all museum tours include a visit.
- The museum is a must-visit for art fans as well as for scholars of Persian, Arabic, or Urdu. There's a massive library available for researchers.
- Facilities at the museum include a shop, a cafe, a cloakroom, and Wi-Fi.
- Special camera/smartphone tickets are required for visitors who want to take photos.
- The museum is wheelchair-accessible and has accessible restrooms.
Salar Jung Museum is located right by the Musi River, a short walk from the Afzalgunj neighborhood. It’s a well-known site, and most taxi and autorickshaw drivers will be able to get you there easily. Regular bus service is available from the museum to the Secunderabad and Nampally Railway Stations and both the Mahatma Gandhi and Jubilee Bus Stations are within walking distance of the museum.
Salar Jung Museum is open to visitors every day except for Fridays and around half a dozen religious holidays. It's a good idea to check the website for year-specific holiday information before heading out. Note that the ticket counter closes 45 minutes before the museum closes.
Although the Salar Jung Museum is among Hyderabad's most important attractions, there's plenty more to see and do in the city, particularly if you're a fan of history. Popular attractions include the massive Chowmahalla Palace, where the city's rulers once lived, and the 16th-century Charminar, by far Hyderabad's most recognizable sight.
