POINT OF INTEREST

Monastery of San Martiño Pinario (Mosteiro de San Martiño Pinario)

Praza da Inmaculada 5, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña

This Benedictine monastery is known for its architecture and decor, including a baroque exterior with gargoyles, and an interior with impressive sculptures and an ornate altar. During the summer months, two 17th-century cloisters provide lodging for visitors and pilgrims walking the nearby Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago).

Located in Santiago de Compostela, this historic landmark was once one of the most important monasteries in Galicia, and can be found near the southern facade of the cathedral. Many pilgrims and travelers walking the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) visit the monastery, which is also a popular stop during guided tours.

  • The monastery is a must-see for history buffs, religious travelers, and pilgrims traveling the Way of St. James.
  • Check the monastery’s website before a visit; seasonal special events include concerts during Holy Week.
  • Large packages, backpacks, and umbrellas are not allowed inside the monastery.
  • The site is partially accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

The monastery is located at Plaza de la Inmaculada in Santiago de Compostela. Many visitors arrive on foot, some via public transportation on the 981, 542, or 416 bus.

The monastery is open year-round, with limited hours from November through May and extended hours from June through October. Guided tours are available on a daily basis. Since most travelers visit during the summer, you can avoid crowds by visiting during the spring or fall.

During a visit to the monastery, be sure to seek out an exhibit of portraits, which show people living in small villages throughout Spain and Italy, offering a glimpse into the daily life of these once isolated cultures. The monastery also displays a range of temporary exhibitions.
