MOCA Bangkok (Museum of Contemporary Art)

499 Kamphaengphet 6 Road, Ladyao, Chatuchak, Bangkok, THA

In a country rich in traditional crafts and designs, Bangkok’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA provides a space for the display and celebration of contemporary art. It displays permanent and temporary exhibits, mostly from Thai artists but with some international artists on display too. MOCA is a must-visit for art lovers, and anyone interested in Thai culture, society, and history.

MOCA opened in 2012 and is the collection of Boonchai Bencharongkul, a Thai communications businessperson. It displays the work of Thai artists, many of whom have gained recognition internationally, and particularly emphasizes the development of Thai fine arts alongside Western influences. The works explore contemporary issues affecting Thai society. Some European, Vietnamese, Chinese, and other international artists are also displayed. It’s a large gallery spread over five floors, and is well-designed, using natural light and open spaces. Most travelers visit MOCA independently, but some guided tours include it on the itinerary, especially arts-focused tours.

  • There is an entry fee. Kids under 15 and seniors over 60 are free.
  • It’s recommended to spend at least two hours here. Real art enthusiasts could be happy spending four hours at MOCA.
  • There’s a cafe on the ground floor.

MOCA is in the Chatuchak area of Bangkok, north of the center. The closest Skytrain station is Mo Chit, and from there the gallery is a 10-minute taxi ride away.

MOCA is closed on Mondays. Other days, it’s open from 10am until 6pm. As it’s in the same part of the city as the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market, it’s a good idea to visit MOCA on a Saturday or Sunday, before or after a trip to the market.

To learn about more traditional Thai crafts, textiles, and architecture, the Jim Thompson House is a must-visit destination. American Jim Thompson lived in Thailand in the mid-20th century and was partly responsible for reviving the silk weaving industry. His beautiful house and gardens in central Bangkok have been turned into a museum.
