Lincoln Home National Historic Site, 8th and Jackson sts., was the only home Lincoln ever owned; it was built in 1839 and purchased by him in 1844. Restored to look as it did in the 1860s, the home is part of a four-block historic district that is being returned to its mid-19th century appearance. A self-guiding walking tour of the neighborhood has signs posted at each house describing the home's residents in 1860. The Lincoln family lived in the house for 17 years, eventually expanding it to two stories. It was in the formal parlor that Lincoln was asked by representatives of the Republican National Convention in May 1860 to be that party's presidential nominee. The Lincoln Home Visitor Center, 426 S. 7th St., has displays and sculptures and presents orientation videos. The Dean House, across 8th Street, has an exhibit examining Lincoln's family life during his Springfield years, and the Arnold House, across Jackson Street, offers an exhibit about historic preservation; self-guiding tours are available. An audio tour by cellphone is available. Guided tours are available.
