Koza Han
Osmangazi Uzunçarşı Caddesi, Osmangazi, Bursa
Commissioned in the 15th century by Sultan Bayezid II in Bursa, Turkey (officially the Republic of Türkiye), the Koza Han served as a caravanserai that provided income for the sultan’s mosque in Istanbul. Due to its strategic location at the end of the Silk Road, Koza Han—aka the Cocoon Inn—became a popular place for merchants to unload the last of their silk.
The entrance to Koza Han, decorated with intricate turquoise tiling, opens up to a central garden courtyard. There are nearly 100 rooms and former horse stables and storage rooms. Today, Koza Han still functions as a modern bazaar and continues to sell a wide variety of silk and other products.
Some private and small-group tours visit Koza Han from Istanbul as part of a day trip. You can reach Bursa from Istanbul by ferry or bus.
Koza Han is a must-visit for history and architecture buffs, and is also ideal for travelers seeking some silk souvenirs to take home.
Haggling is expected at Koza Han, so make sure to bargain for your perfect price.
Wear comfortable shoes to peruse Koza Han.
Koza Han is located in the center of Bursa, not far from many mosques and museums in the city center. From Istanbul, take a ferry or longer bus ride to Bursa—or skip the hassle and book a tour that includes round-trip transportation.
Koza Han is open to the public seven days a week, from the morning through the evening. It can get very busy in the afternoon, so arrive earlier in the day if you want to avoid the crowds and wander at your leisure.
Haggling is expected in traditional Turkish bazaars. Don’t be afraid to ask for a lower price than what is initially offered. Usually the vendor will come back with a counteroffer, so it helps to start off with a lower price than you are willing to pay. Decide ahead of time what your budget is and stick to it.
