Johns Hopkins University, w. of N. Charles St., is a small, private liberal arts university founded in 1876. The 140-acre campus originally was the estate of Charles Carroll Jr., son of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Today the Homewood campus has nearly 5,000 undergraduates studying in top-ranked programs from creative writing to biomedical engineering. Bufano Sculpture Garden, Homewood Museum and a dozen public works of art can be visited. The university's well-known schools of medicine, public health, nursing and music are elsewhere in Baltimore.
