Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site

FDR’s home estate, Springwood, can be visited on guided tours. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Henry A. Wallace Visitor Center, where tours start with a 22-minute educational film. The estate grounds, which include the Rose Garden where FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt lie buried, and miles of walking trails, are best seen on self-guided tours. The Presidential Library and Museum are independently operated and require a separate admission ticket.

The historic site is in Hyde Park, around 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) north of Poughkeepsie. Take either the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line from Grand Central Station or Amtrak lines to Poughkeepsie, then take a taxi, rideshare, or the Dutchess Bus Service Route C. There’s free parking on-site.

Tours of the house take around an hour and are available four times daily, with holiday closures for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. During high season—typically July, August, and October)—tours can sell out, so plan your visit earlier in the day to guarantee a slot. The grounds and gardens are open from sunrise to sunset. During the winter, the site may close due to the weather.

Located a few miles east of Springwood, Top Cottage is a Dutch-style stone cottage that was built as a retreat for FDR, who used it for entertaining and official meetings requiring more privacy. Although technically part of the Home of Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic Site, the cottage requires a separate admission ticket and is open to the public from May to October.
