Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park
9001 US 23S, Mackinaw City, MI, 49701
Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park is 3 mi. s.e. on US 23. This is the site of an 18th-century industrial complex believed to be the oldest in the Great Lakes region. A water-powered sawmill built about 1790 provided lumber for construction on Mackinac Island. Archeological evidence of the sawmill, a dam and several houses was discovered in 1972 by a Cheboygan high school history teacher. There is a 12-minute audiovisual orientation. Demonstrations of sawmill operations are given daily. The reconstructed millwright’s house is near the sawmill. Interpretive nature trails lead to scenic overlooks, including a view of the Mackinac Bridge and a beaver colony. The guided 40-minute Adventure Tour combines hiking and zipline exploration of local wildlife and plants as well as a visit to the Forest Canopy Bridge and the Natural Trail climbing wall. Note: Adventure Tour participants must weigh between 50 and 250 pounds and be at least 4 feet tall. Clothing items that are not permitted on Adventure Tours include skirts, dresses, flip-flops and loose-fitting sandals; shoes must be securely attached. A liability waiver must be signed. Guided tours are available. Food is available.
