Grosse Cloche

Rue Saint-James, Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

One of the oldest belfries in France—and among Bordeaux’s most recognizable landmarks—the Grosse Cloche (the Big Bell) is a veritable symbol of the city. Dating back to the 13th century and located right in the city center, the belfry used to serve as a defensive gate and prison; what’s left of the old ramparts and dungeons can be visited on select dates throughout the year.

The Grosse Cloche is a former medieval entrance to the city of Bordeaux, and a vestige of the defensive ramparts which once encircled the city. Instantly recognizable for its turrets, ornate clock, and 8.5-ton (7.7-tonne) bell, the belfry used to be a part of the city’s old town hall. Today, the bell rings on rare occasions, typically for select public holidays and remembrances, though it also tolls at noon on the first Sunday of every month.

Given its location in Bordeaux’s historic center, the Grosse Cloche is easy to admire on walking, bike, or sidecar tours. The belfry is also open to visitors on select dates from April to September.

  • Owing to its historic architecture and many stairs, the Grosse Cloche is not accessible.

  • Children aged 6 and under are not permitted inside the Grosse Cloche.

  • The Grosse Cloche offers guided tours in French only; however, walking and cycling tours of Bordeaux’s historic center are available in English.

The Grosse Cloche is located in central Bordeaux, on Rue Saint-James just past its intersection with Cours Victor Hugo. The area is served by the Porte de Bourgogne tram station (lines A, C, and D), and the Place du Palais and Saint-Catherine stations (line A). It can also be reached by numerous local bus lines, on foot, or by bike.

The Grosse Cloche can be admired throughout the year, and there’s never a bad time to take in its exterior splendor. If you wish to venture inside the bell tower and companion dungeon, plan your visit for when the belfry is open, typically from April through September. Several visiting slots are offered on Saturdays (and sometimes Mondays).

Central Bordeaux has earned UNESCO World Heritage designation for its wealth of landmarks and important wine history, and you should pair your visit to the Grosse Cloche with a sightseeing tour of its other highlights. Nearby attractions include the Porte Cailhau, the Bordeaux Cathedral, and the Place de la Bourse.
