Evergreen Museum & Library is at 4545 N. Charles St., 1.5 blks. n. of Cold Spring Ln. This 1850s 48-room Gilded Age mansion was home to B&O Railroad’s Garrett family 1878-1942 and today is part of Johns Hopkins University. These two generations of discriminating collectors accumulated more than 50,000 objects. Among the items are Asian ceramics, American art glass and European paintings and sculptures, including works by Tiffany, Modigliani, Picasso and Degas. Other highlights include a 23-karat gold-plated bathroom and formal gardens. The 30,000-volume library contains prints, manuscripts, rare books and other artifacts from around the world. The 1923 theater was created by Leon Bakst, renowned for his sets and costumes for Ballet Russes. Special events, lectures, concerts, performances, exhibitions and educational programs are scheduled throughout the year. The museum can only be seen by guided tour. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
