Coral Castle
28655 S. Dixie Hwy., Homestead, FL, 33033
Coral Castle is at 28655 S. Dixie Hwy. Using handmade tools, Latvian immigrant Ed Leedskalnin worked alone 1923-51 to build the castle as a monument to his lost love. Weighing 100 pounds and standing just over 5 feet tall, Leedskalnin built Coral Castle at night in secret. The building is made of massive blocks of hand-hewn coral rock, some weighing 27 tons. Sculptured pieces include a 28-ton, 25-foot-tall Polaris telescope, a table carved to scale in the shape of the state of Florida including Lake Okeechobee, 1,000-pound rocking chairs and a fountain representing the phases of the moon. A 9-ton gate and working sundial with seasons also are on the grounds. A video presentation features the history of the site. Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
