Capital – Saratoga
28 Clinton St., Capital Saratoga, Saratoga Springs, NY
The Capital-Saratoga region is home to New York’s capital, Albany, though it’s the town of Saratoga Springs—home to the Saratoga Race Course and naturally carbonated mineral springs—that is perhaps a bigger draw. It’s also an ideal jumping-off point for the Adirondacks further north and the Hudson Valley to the south.
The Capital-Saratoga region is a popular upstate New York escape. Visitors usually start by hiking nature trails and soaking in the spring waters at Saratoga State Park. The park is also home to the the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the National Museum of Dance.
In Albany, explore the New York State Capitol—built at the turn of the 20th century— browse the exhibits at the New York State Museum, and view artworks from artists such as Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock at Empire State Plaza. For a more tranquil option, try fishing or boating at Great Sacandaga Lake.
- The Capital-Saratoga region is a must for horse racing fans.
- Book accommodation in advance if you plan on attending Saratoga’s summer meet, as rooms frequently sell out during this period.
- Capital-Saratoga makes a good midway stop-off point for travelers planning a road trip between New York and Montreal.
Driving north from New York City along Interstate 87 (I-87) to Albany and Saratoga Springs takes roughly 3–4 hours. Montreal-bound Greyhound buses depart from Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan and stop in Albany, while Amtrak trains connect New York City’s Penn Station with Albany.
The best times to visit are late spring, summer, and early fall when warmer weather allows visitors to enjoy the outdoors. Saratoga is liveliest during summer.
Saratoga Race Course is among the most well-known courses in the US, as well as being the oldest—the tracks date back to 1864. Though the racing season extends through summer, the most popular event is the Travers Stakes. Traditionally held on the last Saturday in August, it’s nicknamed Saratoga’s Midsummer Derby and draws large crowds.
