Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center is at 160 W. Main St. The Homestake Mine is one of the oldest and largest underground gold mines in the Western Hemisphere, reaching 8,000 feet below the surface. Historic area photographs, videos and science- and mining-themed artifacts are on display. A 3-D model of the cave is a highlight. The 1,000-foot-deep open cut mine can been viewed from an observation deck. Summer tours include a visit to the open cut mine, shop yards, hoist area and wastewater treatment center. Limited tours are offered in winter. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
