Cape Cod Canal

Cape Cod Canal, with a field office .2 mi. s. of Main St. on Academy Dr., is part of a 17.4-mile link between Buzzards Bay and Cape Cod Bay. The artificial waterway was designed to save an average of 165 miles of coastline travel around the tip of Cape Cod. Recreational facilities include 13.5 miles of paved walking and bicycling paths. Fishing from the shore is permitted; however, swimming is prohibited. Multiple day-use recreation areas are located along both sides of the canal. Open seasonally, the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center in Sandwich has films and exhibits about the canal. Note: Photo ID is required. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
