Black Hills Mining Museum
323 W. Main St., Lead, SD, 57754
Black Hills Mining Museum is at 323 W. Main St. The history and heritage of mining in the Black Hills is depicted through exhibits, historic photographs and life-size models. Guided 45-minute tours lead through a simulated underground level of the Homestake Gold Mine, which operated 1876-2002, allowing visitors to see examples of both early and modern mining techniques. Miners and former mine employees were instrumental in creating the display, resulting in a realistic depiction of this rigorous trade. The mine was considered one of the world's largest, plunging some 8,000 feet below the ground. A 15-minute video is shown throughout the day in the restored theater. Visitors can try panning for gold for an additional fee. Staff members provide guidance during this hands-on activity; participants are informed about proper panning techniques and receive a placer gold sample that they panned themselves. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
