Fort Worden State Park & Conference Center is 1 mi. n. via Cherry St. to 200 Battery Way. The fort within this 434-acre park was part of an important system of coastal fortresses guarding the entrance to Puget Sound established in the 1890s. The large, grassy parade ground remains, and the handsome Victorian houses along Officers' Row have been restored. The rhododendron garden contains more than 1,100 plants.
