In the northeast corner of the forest, east of Metaline Falls, is the 43,000-acre Salmo-Priest Wilderness Area. No motorized vehicles are permitted, but FRs 22, 20 and 270 and Sullivan Creek Road, south of Metaline Falls off SR 31, all lead to trailheads where visitors can continue into the wilderness area on foot. These roads are closed due to weather conditions from mid-November to early or mid-June.
Brochures and maps outlining several of the forest's self-guiding automobile and hiking routes are available at ranger stations in Kettle Falls, Metaline Falls, Newport and Republic. For additional information contact the Forest Supervisor's office, 765 S. Main St., Colville, WA 99114; phone (509) 684-7000.
