Popular summer activities include swimming, camping, picnicking, boating, rafting, canoeing and hunting. More than 800 miles of rivers and streams offer myriad opportunities for fishing. Numerous trails are suitable for hiking, horseback riding, backpacking, off-roading and mountain biking. There are skiing facilities at Dodge Ridge off SR 108 and at Mount Reba off SR 4. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing also are popular during the winter.

Visitor tours and programs are offered June through August at Pinecrest. The Emigrant and Carson-Iceberg wildernesses are at the eastern end of the forest.
