More than a dozen members of the Colonial elite were among original lot owners—George and Martha Washington bought property in the area. The springs continue to flow from five main sources at the rate of 1,000-1,500 gallons per minute; the water maintains a uniform temperature of 74 F.
Though known for its spas, Berkeley Springs is also gaining notice as an arts community. The town is home to a growing number of art and craft galleries and shows.
