DESTINATION

Manitowoc

Formerly distinguished as one of the world's largest producers of aluminum ware, the city balances its commercial enterprises with refuges for both animals and nature lovers. Collins Marsh Wildlife Area, 16 miles west of Manitowoc on CR JJ, is a natural haven for wildfowl; it is open May through October on a limited basis.

The SS Badger, operated by the Lake Michigan Carferry Service , offers a 4-hour cross-lake car-ferry service from Manitowoc to Ludington, Mich. from mid-May to early October. For information and fares phone (920) 684-0888 or (800) 841-4243. Several charter fishing associations also operate out of the town.
