At the close of the Civil War, City Point continued on as a military reservation with the last troops leaving in November 1867. The modern successor to City Point emerged with the building of a dynamite factory by E.I. du Pont on the site of Hopewell Farms in 1912. World War I sparked a boom with the factory manufacturing gun cotton, but that evaporated by 1918, with Hopewell again becoming a quiet village. Diversified industry once more has brought prosperity to this seaport.
