Amistad National Recreation Area

This tract of land and water was the prehistoric home of Native Americans. Excavations have uncovered more than 300 sites. Primitive campsites are at San Pedro Flats on Spur 454, at Governor's Landing on Spur 349, and at three other points: one along US 277N, another along Spur 406, and lastly, one off Recreation Rd. 2 in Rough Canyon. Houseboats can be rented; contact the park office for more information.

Popular activities include picnicking, swimming and hiking. Fishing is possible all year. A Mexican license must be obtained for fishing in Mexican waters; phone (619) 233-4324. Hunting is permitted only in designated areas. Shotgun hunting for dove, quail, ducks and other waterfowl is permitted only during the hunting season. Other hunting is only by bow and arrow and is restricted to deer, rabbits, javelinas and turkeys. Rifles and pistols are not permitted.
