The city's position on a bluff at the mouth of the Cape Fear River made it a strategic location for Fort Johnston, built in 1764. Today the fort, which was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1775, is occupied by the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Army's Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal.
Just across the Cape Fear River from Southport lies Bald Head Island, known for its pristine beaches, tidal creeks, salt marshes and absence of automobiles. The resort community on the island offers recreational activities, including daily bicycle and golf cart rentals. Ferry service from Southport is provided by Bald Head Island Transportation; phone (910) 457-5003 or (800) 234-1666.
