About Jacksonville
Jacksonville, located at the mouth of the New River, is associated with Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps base that is home to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force and 2nd Marine Logistics Group. The granite Beirut Memorial, built to honor marines and sailors killed in Beirut, Lebanon and Grenada, stands just outside the gate of Camp Johnson on SR 17. Each Bradford pear tree along Lejeune Boulevard stands for a life lost in Lebanon or Grenada. Also on the grounds is a 9/11 Memorial featuring a steel beam from the World Trade Center and the Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial, inscribed with the names of the 58,229 men and women who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.AAA/iStockphoto.com
