For a glimpse of local history, check out Highlands Historic Village, 524 N. 4th St. Here stands the town's oldest residence, the 1877 House-Boynton-Trapier-Wright Home. Also in the village are the 1908 Bug Hill Cottage, one of 60 outdoor chambers constructed as part of a tuberculosis sanatorium, and Highlands Historical Museum. Phone (828) 787-1050.
Find out what’s blooming in Highlands Botanical Garden, 265 N. 6th St.; phone (828) 526-2602. Several trails traverse the grounds through woodlands and along streams where native plants thrive. Guided tours are offered Monday at 10:30, late May through early August. Six hiking trails wind through Cliffside Lake Recreation Area, 4 miles northwest of Highlands via SR 28 and Highlands Road.
