Troy's Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is one of the nation's foremost technological institutions of higher learning and one of the oldest engineering schools in the English-speaking world. The school owns and operates Rensselaer Technology Park, the site of a growing number of Troy's high-tech companies.
Troy and neighboring communities form the RiverSpark Heritage Park, which preserves the historical features at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. Included in the park are waterfalls, 19th-century mill districts and workers' houses, river fronts, canals, warehouses, music halls, churches and merchants' mansions. A 26-mile heritage trail links the park's various features, and 2nd Street offers many fine examples of 19th-century architecture.
