NATIONAL PARK

Fire Island National Seashore

Wildlife is abundant along the seashore. Anglers can find bass, blowfish, bluefish, fluke, mackerel, weakfish and winter flounder. Waterfowl are numerous October through March; white-tailed deer, red foxes and rabbits also can be seen.

The seashore is accessible by car near its eastern end at Smith Point County Park, via the Robert Moses Causeway from the west or by mainland ferry service that leaves Bay Shore, Sayville and Patchogue in summer. The Fire Island Wilderness Visitor Center at Smith Point West next to Smith Point County Park has exhibits and visitor information; a ranger is on duty year-round. The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday; phone (631) 281-3010. A national wilderness area extends west for 7 miles.

The lightkeeper's quarters of the mid-19th-century Fire Island Lighthouse is a visitor center with exhibits about the history of the site. To reach the lighthouse, park at the east end of Robert Moses State Park and walk about a half-mile. Physically impaired persons can park at the lighthouse; phone (631) 661-4876.

Sailors Haven, 1 mile west of the private community of Cherry Grove, offers a marina, beach and picnic areas. A self-guiding nature trail leads through the Sunken Forest. Access to Sailors Haven is by boat or walk-on ferry from Sayville; phone (631) 589-0810. Round-trip fare is $16; $7.50 (ages 2-11); $4.50 (dog). Visitor services are offered during the summer.

The William Floyd Estate is at 245 Park Dr. in Mastic Beach. The preserved house of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence reflects the changes in styles during the 250 years of Floyd family ownership. Guided house tours and self-guiding grounds tours are available mid-May to mid-November; phone (631) 399-2030.
