The fire of the chile peppers—one of the Rio Grande Valley's major crops—is nearly matched by the thermal springs that bubble to the surface in Truth or Consequences (their average temperature is 110 F). The Apaches took advantage of the water's legendary curative properties, and bathhouses operated in the vicinity of the springs in the early 20th century.
Both Elephant Butte Lake State Park in Elephant Butte and Caballo Lake State Park in Caballo offer water-oriented recreation.
