The history of the town dates back to the great westward expansion, when thousands of pioneers crossed through on the Mormon and Oregon trails. In 1860-61 riders on the Pony Express route passed south of Gothenburg, carrying mail. Advertisements seeking riders asked for fearless young men weighing less than 135 pounds—“orphans preferred.”
Historic homes and tree-lined streets surround Ehmen Park, established in the 1890s. Lake Helen Recreation Area and Lafayette Park feature a reservoir with picnic areas, a playground and a campground. A covered bridge connects the campground with the park.
