There also are excellent views of the iron ore docks, which rise 80 feet above the harbor, from the vantage point of The Depot Museum. Taconite pellets are delivered to these docks from northern Minnesota mines via rail and then loaded onto a conveyor system for dumping into ore boats, which then transport the cargo to steel mills for processing. It takes approximately 7 hours for 55,000 to 60,000 tons of pellets from 800 rail cars to be loaded into the belly of one of these huge boats.
