Early on, Winchester became the marketing center of the agricultural inner Bluegrass Region. Industrial enterprises and manufacturing supplement the economy.

Of interest off SR 1924 is the Civil War Fort at Boonesboro. Built by Union soldiers in 1863, the earthwork fortification was used to defend the ford and ferry at Boonesboro. Today visitors can hike the scenic trail with views of the Kentucky River and see a mural depicting the history of the river. Guided tours are offered by appointment; phone (859) 744-0556. Located on 240 acres of land, the Lower Howard's Creek Nature Preserve offers guided tours of its environment of native flora and fauna; phone (859) 744-4888.
