Iowa City also is a creative hub—home to the university’s world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop, which counts John Irving, Flannery O’Connor and more than a dozen Pulitzer Prize winners among its alumni. The Iowa Avenue Literary Walk pays homage to some of these talents in a series of bronze relief panels featuring the authors’ words. Visitors can research history and genealogy at the State Historical Society Research Center, 402 Iowa Ave., Thurs.-Sat. 9-4:30; phone (319) 335-3916.
A farmers market takes place across from city hall, 410 E. Washington St., each Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 and Saturday mornings from 7:30 to noon, May-Oct.; additional vendors line E. Washington St. on Saturdays. There are stalls of fresh produce as well as homemade products, and free entertainment includes vocal and instrumental performances June through October.
