The town's Washington Square is where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas held a senatorial debate on Aug. 21, 1858. Surrounded by examples of Greek Revival, Italianate and English High Gothic architecture, the square continues to be used for entertainment gatherings. The Main Street district offers antiques, specialty stores and outdoor murals.
