“Tufa towers” lend a surreal atmosphere to this beautiful setting. Composed of calcium carbonate and shaped over time by the interaction of the alkaline lake water and surrounding freshwater springs, the rocks look like twisty spires rising from the flat land. The reserve is particularly beautiful in the winter, when snow on the rock formations sparkles in the sunlight.
Mono Lake County Park, 5 miles north off US 395, has a shady streamside picnic area and a boardwalk trail that winds through meadows to the lakeshore. Contact the information center for details about naturalist tours and canoe trips.
