Introduction

Modern cruise ships in the San Juan cruise port stand out against the backdrop of the historic walled community, which features pastel-colored homes and cobblestone walkways paved with blue adoquines. The old settlement is located on a small islet that is connected to the mainland by a series of bridges. San Juan is a metropolis that occupies almost 48 square miles and extends beyond its seven-block historic area. Beyond the historic district, there’s the Caribbean's largest convention center, a gleaming $415 million waterfront complex that can accommodate up to 10,000 delegates, as well as the region's largest shopping mall, the three-story Plaza Las Américas.

Search for a good deal on designer brands or a vejigante carnival mask. Hand-rolled cigars, aged island rum and spicy criolla cuisine are all available for sampling. Explore colonial architecture, ancient Taino antiquities, African artwork and modern art, or simply relax on the waterfront. No matter one’s travel preferences, the community of San Juan extends a hearty bienvenidos, or welcome.
