On a bluff facing westward toward the lake, Goderich has wide tree-lined streets radiating like spokes from the courthouse. Recreation includes boating; golfing; hiking; swimming; windsurfing; fishing and canoeing on the Maitland River in spring and summer; and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter. The Clinton Raceway, 20 kilometres (12 mi.) southeast of town at 147 Beech St., offers live harness racing Sundays from early May to mid-September; phone (519) 482-5270 or (519) 482-7540.
Note: Policies concerning admittance of children to pari-mutuel betting facilities vary. Phone for information.
The Blyth Festival, 25 kilometres (16 mi.) east in the village of Blyth at 423 Queen St., offers professional summer theater from mid-June to late August. The productions have a decidedly nationalistic flavor—all plays are written, produced and acted by Canadians; phone (519) 523-9300 or (877) 862-5984. Closer to home, the Goderich Little Theatre presents live theatrical productions in the historic Livery at 35 South St.; phone (519) 524-6262.
