In Peacekeeper Park, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi.) east on Hwy. 1, stands the Silent Witness Memorial. This statue of an unarmed soldier is a tribute to the 259 members of the 101st U.S. Airborne Division, killed when their plane crashed after refueling at Gander in December 1985. They were on their way home from peacekeeping duties in the Middle East.
Gander enjoys a central spot in one of the finest big-game hunting and salmon-fishing areas of the province. West of Gander across Hwy. 1 is Gander Lake, home of a large number of moose.
The Road to the Shore—hwys. 330, 320 and 1—is a scenic loop drive through coastal communities north and east of Gander.
Cobb's Pond Rotary Park features a 3-kilometre (1.9-mi.) boardwalk that encircles the pond, allowing visitors a closer look at local plants and wildlife. Other nearby parks include Square Pond, Jonathan's Pond and Notre Dame.
