The surrounding Texas Hill Country has many lakes and dude ranches. Horseback riding is popular.

Horse racing, both Thoroughbred and quarter horse, takes place at Retama Park; phone (210) 651-7000. Thoroughbred racing occurs Friday and Saturday from October through December; quarter horse racing occurs Friday and Saturday from June through August. Additionally, there are daily simulcasts.
