- Easter is by far the biggest and most important event in the Greek calendar, and it is well worth visiting Athens and other parts of Greece to witness the festivities. Churches will be open prior to Easter weekend as people prepare for the festivities. The bier on which Christ's body will be laid is decorated with flowers, and on Friday evening is carried through the streets. On Easter Saturday evening the main church service takes place, climaxing at midnight. On Easter Sunday families get together for big celebrations.
