Carnival (Karnaváli) is not celebrated as widely in Greece as elsewhere in the world, though in Athens you may find impromptu
music sessions in the streets, with children wearing costumes and hitting people on the head with plastic hammers. The Pláka
becomes packed with Athenians.
-
The carnival takes place during the three weeks prior to Lent, with the biggest celebrations on the Sunday immediately before
the start of Lent - seven weeks before Easter weekend.
